The statewide stay-at-home order issued by Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Public Health, among other things, protects people from evictions and foreclosures for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis.

The order goes into effect at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 4.

Because the stay-at-home order requires people to stay home, and many to miss work at non-essential businesses, the order gives temporary protection to Alabama's citizens against evictions from their residence.

All state, county, and local law enforcement officers are hereby directed to cease enforcement of any order that would result in the displacement of a person from his or her place of residence.

People should continue to pay rent, make mortgage payments and comply with other obligations of their lease when they are able and should expect that all payments will be due at some point after the coronavirus crisis is over.

If you can't make payments you should contact your landlord or mortgage company to inform them and make arrangements to pay at a later date.
