Iconic WWE wrestler 'The Iron Sheik' has died at age 81

Legendary WWE wrestler "The Iron Sheik" has died.

He was 81 years old.

His real name was Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri.

The news was announced on the wrestler's social media accounts Wednesday.

Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling," a statement noted. "It is with great sadness that we hare the new of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come."

It was not immediately known what caused his death.

WWE posted about the wrestler's death.

WWE is saddened to hear of the passing of WWE Hall of Famer The Iron Sheik, and extends its condolences to his family, friends, and fans, according to a tweet."

He joined WWE in 1979 and was the only Iranian champion in WWE history, as he won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 1983.

The Iron Sheik, who hailed from a small village in Iran, was "a trailblazer" in the wrestling ring. He broke barriers and paved "the way for a diverse range of wrestlers who followed in his footsteps."

Aside from his role as a popular wrestler, the statement noted that The Iron Sheik "was a devoted family man" who "cherished the love and support of his wife of 47 years years Caryl, who stood by his side through thick and thin, offering unwavering encouragement throughout his life. Their bond was an anchor providing him with the strength to face the challenges that life presented."

He also had three children, Tanya, Nikki, and Marissa, as well as a son in law, Eddie, plus five grandchildren.
